Your Dental Health Questions Answered

Our “Dentist of the Month” will be answering questions straight from dental patients and our Members. This month, Dr. Uttma S. Dham, located in Plantation, Florida, has provided really helpful answers to some of your important dental health questions:

How important is taking care of your teeth?

Most people don’t realize that your teeth are directly related to your entire body. Our mouths are an open route to our heart, brain, and blood system. If we neglect our oral health, it can lead   to serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and premature birth. Our mouths are as important as our cardiovascular systems.

Should I change my toothpaste or floss more often?

There’s no set time frame on changing toothpaste or floss. You should, however, change your toothbrush every 60 to 90 days, and use tape floss instead of the floss with handles.

Which foods are the worst for your teeth?

Any complex carbohydrates that break down to simple sugars can be damaging, including  raisins, fruit gummies, dried fruits, pastas and breads. Simple sugars like candies, soft drinks, sweet teas and coffee are also damaging. Consume these foods sparingly, rather than snacking or sipping soft drinks throughout the day. And, always remember to brush your teeth afterward.

Do white teeth mean healthy teeth?

Absolutely not.  White teeth are pretty, but cavities can hide in between the teeth, and may not show their ugly faces until the tooth is badly decayed or infected. Periodontal disease is a silent disease that affects a large portion of the population. If not treated properly, teeth can be lost, no matter how white they are.

Why do you accept dental plans?

Dentistry can become costly for everyone.  At our office, we treat patients the way we would  treat our own family.  In doing so, dental plans help patients keep their smiles healthy and able to complete their recommended treatment plans.  A healthy smile is our mutual goal, so working with our patients in a way that can benefit them is our top priority.

Dr. Dham’s office specializes in family and cosmetic dentistry, and accepts 11 discount dental plans as an affordable alternative to dental insurance. She graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern University, and has been practicing for more than nine years in South Florida. Dr. Dham is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Broward County Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, and Community Smiles Dental Clinic.

“We are more than just a dental office,” says Dr. Dham. “We are a dental family, and we care for each patient as we would a family member.”

She takes pride in her highly qualified staff, and says they are constantly continuing their dental education in an effort to provide the very best treatment and care for patients.
