According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the benefits of corrective orthodontic devices outweigh the potential downsides.

Individuals who sucked their thumbs, lost their baby teeth too early or suffered mouth trauma may need braces to correct crooked or overcrowded teeth. The ADA suggests that even people who don’t mind the appearance of misaligned teeth should seek braces or orthodontic solutions, since these conditions can make proper brushing difficult and may aid in the formation of tooth decay. An untreated abnormal bite may also cause a person difficulty when speaking or chewing.

According to the ADA, children should undergo an orthodontic evaluation between the ages of 8 and 14. Individuals who receive braces when their bones are still growing may achieve straight teeth in a shorter amount of time.

Adults who need braces may not need to worry about showing off a metal mouth, thanks to a couple of new treatment options. Some orthodontists will place the brackets of braces on the backs of an individual’s teeth to help limit visibility. Invisible braces also provide an alternative to the standard metal apparatuses.

Minneapolis orthodontist Trudy Bonvino suggests consulting your dentist to determine which dental conditions need to be fixed. Identifying whether you have an underbite, overbite or crooked teeth may help you and your orthodontist decide whether invisible braces are a good choice.

Bonvino adds that people who lead hectic lifestyles may consider invisible devices, since they can provide faster results and require fewer orthodontic visits than other treatment methods.

To help cut down on the costs of frequent checkups or repairs, those who wear braces should avoid certain foods that may unhinge brackets or damage metal. Some of these include chewy candies, popcorn and nuts.

Careful daily brushing is needed to help reduce the amount of food debris that can become trapped under braces. The ADA recommends that if you wear braces, you should try to limit snacking in between meals and always brush your teeth after eating.
