The Truth About Root Canals

Root Canal – two words nobody wants to hear at the dentist. But believe it or not, a root canal is a safe, effective and painless procedure with an extremely high success rate.

According to the American Association of Endodontics, more than 14 million root canal treatments are performed each year.

May 13th is Root Canal Appreciation Day, and was started by Wisconsin dentist Chris Kammer to highlight the benefits and misconceptions regarding this often-dreaded dental careprocedure. According to Kammer, root canals save 42 million teeth each year. And, he believes so strongly in the procedure that he offers live demonstrations of root canals each year.

In honor of this day, and to help you better understand why this procedure is so important, check out these 3 benefits of root canals:

  1. It Can Save Your Tooth: The American Dental Association (ADA) states that in the past, if you had a diseased nerve, you would probably lose your tooth. Now, thanks to root canals, a diseased nerve is no longer a death sentence for teeth.
  2. It Relieves Pain: WebMD states that if you feel pain when you chew or apply pressure to a tooth, are overly sensitive to hot or cold foods or experience swelling of the gums, you may be in need of a root canal, which will alleviate such pain.
  3. It has Long-Lasting Benefits: A tooth restored by a root canal can last a lifetime. However, this will only work if you’re practicing proper dental care techniques, such as brushing twice a day, flossing and visiting the dentist twice a year.

Just remember, most of the time, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort involving one to three visits. Best of all, it can save your tooth and your smile, according to the ADA.
