Movie stars, pop princesses and celebrities of all stripes are expected to look good all the time—whether they’re walking the red carpet in the glare of the spotlights, or dodging paparazzi at a shadowy nightspot. When you look at their pictures, you might never guess that some of the biggest stars weren’t born with perfect teeth. In fact, many have had cosmetic dental work—and some even opted to get orthodontic treatment in the midst of their careers. Here are a few of the best-known celebs who had their teeth straightened with different types of orthodontic appliances.
Pop star and style icon Gwen Stefani made quite a splash a few years ago, when she sported a full set of upper and lower metal braces. Stefani, who was then around age 30, didn’t try to hide the wires and brackets—instead, she made them part of her look, and flashed them at every opportunity. Plenty of other stars have also opted for traditional metal braces, including, at one time or another, Dakota Fanning, Faye Dunaway, Emma Watson… and more recently, brother and sister Jayden and Willow Smith.
Other celebs decided to keep their braces more of a low-profile thing. When Tom Cruise got his, he opted for the inconspicuous ceramic type. With brackets that match the color of your teeth, these braces are hard to notice until you get up close. A favorite choice for adults having orthodontic treatment, ceramic braces have also graced many other smiles in Hollywood—including those of actor Danny Glover, singer Fantasia Barrino, and soccer star-turned-model Cristiano Ronaldo.
Even children who grow up in the glare of spotlights aren’t immune to dental issues. During much of the time she was portraying the Disney character Hannah Montana—a normal kid who kept her other gig as a pop star secret from her parents—actress Miley Cyrus had her own secret: She was having orthodontic treatment! How did she manage to keep it under wraps? Among other things, Cyrus wore lingual braces, which are attached on the tongue side of the teeth, instead of the lip side. What other celebs wore them? We’re not telling…but it has been reported that the wife of a young British Prince is one.
When is the right time to get orthodontic treatment? For Katherine Heigl, it was her upcoming wedding that prompted her to get treatment—and she opted for clear aligners to do the job. “It’s awesome because every two weeks you switch to a new retainer,” she told In Style magazine, describing her treatment as “Netflix for your teeth.” But you don’t have to wait for a big occasion—and plenty of others didn’t. They include Zac Efron, Eva Longoria and Oprah Winfrey.
This isn’t a comprehensive list of stars who have had orthodontic treatment—but it does indicate that having great teeth can be an asset to your appearance. Plus, it shows that it’s never too late to get the smile you’ve always wanted—and orthodontics can be a big help. So if your smile is looking a little less-than-glamorous, why not ask your dentist or orthodontist what kind of treatment might be right for you.
