Natural Remedies for Tooth Pain


Have you been experiencing tooth pain? If so, then you need to visit a dental health professional who can examine you and determine what the underlying cause of your discomfort is. Too many people ignore dental pain because they don’t have adental plan or dental insurance that helps them pay for the cost of the visit. This can lead to a number of extensive and expensive dental procedures or, in severe cases, loss of teeth. The earlier a dental issue is taken care of, the more likely you are to save your money and teeth.

However, without a dental emergency, it may take days or weeks until you are able to stop in to see your dentist. Luckily, there are a few natural remedies that may hold you over until then.


Salt water rinse – If you’re experiencing tooth pain, you should combine warm water and salt (preferably sea salt if you can find it) and rinse with it, particularly in the area of the mouth where the pain is. Don’t swallow, and repeat as necessary.


Tea tree oil – Dental Health Magazine recommends using tea tree oil to alleviate dental concerns, especially if you have gum disease. Studies have shown that people who massage tea tree oil into their gums twice a day have reduce symptoms of gingivitis.


Alcohol – While drinking alcohol to numb tooth pain is a bad idea, use a few drops of a pure form of alcohol, such as pure vanilla extract. Dab on the spot where the tooth hurts to temporarily relieve pain.

Even with a natural remedy, it’s imporant to call a dentist as soon as possible. While some are unavoidable, there are also a few natural remedies to lower the possibility of long-term dental issues:


Vitamin D supplements – Studies have shown that people with higher levels of vitamin D in their systems have a lower risk of developing gum disease. However, your body only produces it naturally with sunlight. If you live somewhere with low levels of sunlight, talk to your doctor about taking vitamin D supplements.


Drink cranberry juice – According to Dental Health Magazine, drinking 3 to 4 ounces of sugar-free cranberry juice may help prevent harmful oral bacteria. Please note though that those with kidney disease or that are on blood thinners should consult with their doctors first, due to hazards when consuming high levels of cranberry juice.
