Our “Dentist of the Month” will be answering questions straight from dental patients and our Members. This month, Dr. Michael Cobbe founder of Cobbe Family Dental & Orthodontics which locations in Palm Harbor, New Port Richey and Spring Hill, Florida has provided really helpful answers to some of your important dental health questions:
How important is taking care of your teeth?
Excellent dental health yields many benefits besides the obvious elimination of infection and pain. There are cosmetic benefits of a bright smile and fresh breath and there are medical considerations as well. Good dental health has been correlated with better cardiovascular health.
How can I improve my dental health?
Dental health is highly correlated with regularity of dental visits on at least a six-month recare cycle. Your dentist will perform the needed hygiene procedures, take needed x-rays appropriate for your situation as well as other diagnostic tests (including oral cancer screening) to diagnose and treat smaller problems before they become larger problems.
Why is a professional tooth whitening better than over-the-counter products?
The number one cosmetic procedure in America today is not a face lift nor is it re-sculpting the nose. It is Tooth Whitening. There are a number of over-the-counter products that can lighten teeth one or maybe two shades. But, if the ‘Hollywood Whitening’ is desired (and why not?) a patient’s best bet is a Professional Whitening. Professional products available to your dentist are generally more concentrated, contain de-sensitizers and the custom trays to deliver the whitening product are made just for your teeth and position the whitener in absolute proximity to the tooth surfaces for maximum effect and whitening. This can only be done by your dentist and the results are simply amazing. As an added benefit, professional whiteners will kill bacteria that cause bad breath and cause gum disease.
How important are orthodontics to general dentistry?
We closely monitor eruption of permanent teeth and if the patient has bite problems with or without crowding and rotations, we can initiate early treatment between the ages of 8 and 11 years old to minimize any full orthodontics and extractions of permanent teeth associated with full orthodontics when all teeth have finally erupted. Of course, we treat traditional adolescent braces and many adults are now having orthodontic treatment.
Dr. Cobbe states his number one priority is to make all patients, young and old, feel at home in their offices. “I believe this is a primary reason for our enduring success. We really take a personalized approach to our patients and we will take the time necessary for each patient. A little TLC goes a long way alleviating a patient’s apprehension”.
Cobbe Family Dental has received numerous awards including reader polls for Best of Suncoast Dental Practice; Best of Suncoast Orthodontic Practice; Best Dentist Award of Florida Doctors, American Top Dentists, Pediatrics and Orthodontics; and Talk of the Town Patient Satisfaction Award, as rated by patients.
