Dentist of the Month: January 2013

Our “Dentist of the Month” will be answering five questions straight from dental patients and Members. This month, Dr. Roxanne Malone who provides dental care for families in Sebastian, FL, will be answering your important dental health questions!

What is dry mouth and how can I avoid it?

Dry mouth, also called Xerostomia, results from an inadequate flow of saliva. Several diseases, treatments and medications can cause dry mouth, such as radiation treatment for head and neck cancers, salivary gland disease, emotional distress and autoimmune diseases like diabetes and Sjogren’s syndrome. You can relieve dry mouth by increasing fluid intake, using biotene toothpaste, alcohol-free oral rinses and chewing sugar-free gum or candy to stimulate saliva flow. You can also restrict intake of caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages.

What are some easy ways to improve the appearance of your teeth?

Getting regular cleanings, brushing and flossing can improve your dental health as well as the appearance of your teeth. You can also try in-office or home teeth whitening. If your teeth stain easily, you can use a mixture of 2/3 baking soda, 1/3 salt and peroxide to brush with once a week. And, smiling a lot not only improves your appearance, but your attitude as well.

How do you calm patients that are apprehensive about a procedure?

What’s important is to recognize your anxiety and accept it as a common reaction to an uncertain situation. I tell my patients to get a good night’s sleep the night before and to eat light meals the day of the appointment. Bringing a headset to listen to music during treatment helps calm them and I arrange a hand signal to indicate if they are feeling discomfort or need a break.

How do you keep updated on the latest general dentistry techniques and technology?

My team is continuously trying to improve their skills. We attend dental meetings and then discuss strategies at our regular team meetings on how to implement them. I participate in many advanced classes and am constantly looking for ways to increase and improve my skills.

Why do you accept Dental Savings Plans?

Our office accepts Dental Savings Plans to make dentistry affordable and accessible to everyone. I believe each patient has a right to have dental treatment. By accepting dental plans, it makes it much easier for patients to have the proper care they need for themselves and their family.
