10 Reasons To Be Thankful For Your Teeth!

September 20 is Love Your Teeth Day in China.  Since we don’t have a similar festival here, we figured Thanksgiving would be the perfect time to show our gratitude to the 32 little friends that live in our mouths. If you’re stuck coming up with reasons to say thanks to your teeth, here are our top ten reasons.

  1. Thanks for all your hard work: Three meals a day, with an average chewing rate of about 10 times per mouthful of food works out to 10,000ish bites per meal. That equals 30,000 chews a day.  It’s not easy being a tooth.
  2. Thanks for not going crazy and overpopulating. We think the typical human allotment of 32 teeth is perfect. (Dogs have 42 teeth, cats have 30 teeth, pigs have 44 teeth, possums have 50 teeth, and snails have thousands . That’s fine for them, but it’s a lot of flossing for a human.)
  3. Thanks for evolving.  Wisdom teeth were useful to our big-jawed ancestors, who needed lots of tooth power to chomp up all those leaves, roots and nuts.  Unless you’ve gone paleo, you don’t need all those big, burly teeth any more. Teeth know this. About 35% of people are born without wisdom teeth these days, and  future generations won’t have the pesky things – they have vanished along with appendices and little toes.
  4. Thanks for staying fit: The average Elephant’s tooth weighs over 6 pounds and measures one foot across. We appreciate your abiity to control your cravings for sweets, teeth, and remain a reasonable size.
  5. Thanks for liking cheese AND wine. You could not have picked a more delicious pairing to ward off decay.
  6. Thanks for being undemanding: The average person spends 38 days brushing their teeth during their lifetime.  We know that needing just a bit more than a month of loving care out of the typical 71 year human life span isn’t much to ask.
  7. Thanks for being orderly. Right handed people chew their food on the right side of their mouths. Ditto, lefties.  Teeth, we truly appreciate your finely tuned sense of symmetry.
  8. Thanks for being you: We find it oddly comforting that no one has exactly the same set of teeth as anyone else does.
  9. Thanks for performing miracles: You sacrificed yourself so a woman could regain her eyesight. That’s awesome.
  10. Thanks for not being afraid of the dark: Children smile 400 times a day, but adults only smile 20 times a day. We appreciate your understanding, and will try to let you see more sunshine in 2015.
