Teeth Whitening Options are Available for Any Budget

Every day, consumers are bombarded with advertisements for products that can improve the appearance of teeth. Teeth whitening agents can be found in lasers, over-the-counter kits, or even in ingredients located in your grocer’s baking aisle.

Now that so many options are widely available, it seems as though white teeth are essential to an individual’s physical appeal.

A recent survey conducted by the Chicago Dental Society (CDS) found that 25 percent of respondents believed that bright white teeth are key to having a perfect smile.

Most families are currently living on a tight budget, but there are several at-home teeth whitening solutions that don’t require hefty payments.

Replacing non-whitening toothpastes with options that contain brightening ingredients is a simple and cost-effective solution for slight surface stains.

More than half of CDS survey participants had used some form of whitening products, and bleaching toothpastes were the most common tools used by those who want to improve the appearance of their teeth.

Baking soda is a popular whitening agent that can be dissolved in water and used to brush teeth a few times per week. However, this solution cannot be used on dentures, since baking soda particles can scratch their surface.

Whitening strips or gels usually range in price from $20 to $50 per treatment and can be found in most grocery stores or pharmacies. These products can be used for one or two consecutive weeks to yield optimal results.

Many people who use at-home whitening remedies experience tooth or gum sensitivity to cold food and drinks. Mouthwashes that help restore tooth enamel can be used in tandem with whitening treatments to reduce these effects.

The Chicago dental care survey found that 10 percent of respondents received professional whitening services from their dentists. These procedures are far more expensive than over-the-counter treatments, but they may be worth the money to individuals who have significant teeth discoloration.

Obtaining an attractive smile can be relatively cheap and easy, but practicing good oral habits can prevent stains in the first place.

Brushing your teeth at least two times per day and avoiding coffee, red wine and other stain-causing substances can help maintain a naturally white smile.

Ask your dentist which methods you can use to achieve the healthy looking teeth you desire.
