Our “Dentist of the Month” will be answering questions straight from dental patients and our Members. This month, Dr. Mark Dankowski, located in Merrillville, Indiana, has provided helpful answers to some of your important dental health questions:

How important is taking care of your teeth?

Taking care of your teeth is vital to the overall health of your body. Teeth are needed to speak, eat, support facial structures and much more. Research shows that oral health is directly related to other diseases and conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. There is even evidence that links pregnant women with periodontal disease to low birth weight babies.

Should I use a fluoride rinse?

Everyone benefits from fluoride in small doses. A daily fluoride rinse will help to prevent decay and decrease sensitivity.

How important is flossing…really?

Flossing is the best way to clean bacteria and food from between your teeth, since brushing alone doesn’t thoroughly clean these areas. If you aren’t flossing, you are missing 30% of the surfaces of your mouth – you are only cleaning 70% of your mouth properly.

What kind of toothpaste do you recommend?

At Lakeland Creek Family Dental, we most often recommend Colgate Total since it has an added ingredient (triciosan) that aids in the fight against gingivitis, but recommendations are always made according to a patient’s individual needs.

Does having white teeth mean that I have healthy teeth?

Not necessarily. Teeth that appear “white” can also have decay and/or be surrounded by periodontal disease.

Is it possible to over-brush?

Some patients do over-brush. This is called “scrubbing,” and can result in excessive tissue recession with sensitivity.

Why do you accept dental plans?

We offer Dental Savings Plans to all of our patients, whether or not they have insurance. If the plan does not benefit them, they may have a friend, neighbor or family member who would be able to utilize the plan. We just want to educate our patients as to what is available to allow them to take care of their dental needs.

Dr. Dankowski’s office specializes in family dentistry. He graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, and is a member of the American Dental Association and Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity.

“Our goal is to establish a long-lasting and personal relationship with you and your family” says Dr. Dankowski. “We aim to achieve this goal through the highest quality dental treatment, state-of-the-art technologies and facilities, and our extraordinary, compassionate staff.”
